Dear Reader,

At 14, when the author and I first met, it felt like some kind of cosmic clerical error—like we were supposed to share DNA. That's how I know firsthand: every bit of The Burn List is true. I was the bestie she called when it all went down.

For twenty years, I watched as academia tore my best friend apart, limb by limb. Until all that remained was fear. This memoir is her hail mary. A cry for help. Her final shot at escaping academia’s cage.

I’m in her story. You’ll meet me there. And hopefully, your friends will too. Because she needs us — all of us — to help break her out.

Dear Reader,

I am a multi-tour Vietnam-era combat veteran who has spent my entire adult life in military, law enforcement, and Special Forces operations. As a contractor for SEAL Team 6, I’ve worked alongside veterans from nearly every modern theater of combat. The level of PTSD in this line of work is staggering.

But not as staggering as my daughter’s survival—and her ability to reverse the damage of her own trauma.

While I was away serving my country, my daughter endured profound abuses in childhood, the kind that are just as mentally and emotionally debilitating as the wounds of war. Her ‘escape’ into academia turned out to be her greatest battleground. The only consolation I find in all that she endured is how she transformed her wounds into strength.

I believe her story can offer hope to anyone suffering from trauma who wants to recover, rebuild, and reclaim their life.
